When do Beaches Open in Budapest?
Previously, most of the beaches opened on May 1st, so you could take a dip after the parade. Today, however, the opening date depends more on the weather and, in connection with this, the expected number of visitors. It is also becoming increasingly common that not all of the seasonal pools are available immediately, they are opened in several stages - writes Termalfurdo.hu.
If we look at the past decade, visitors could take possession of the outdoor pools on the long weekend of Pentecost. This year, however, the beaches will open earlier than that, because Pentecost falls in June. As can be seen from the list below, some of the beaches in Budapest are already open, while others will welcome visitors from the last days of May, but by the first day of the summer holidays, which this year will be June 21 in our country, all the beach pools and slides in the country will be operating.
Which beaches are already open in Budapest?
You can visit Aquaworld and Palatinus Beach if you arrive in Budapest in the last week of May. The latter is very popular: the beach on the beautiful Margaret Island has already opened the Margaréta Pool as one of its seasonal pools for the Easter weekend. If you choose this beach, you can also swim outside, as the swimming pool and the training pool are now open. The outdoor children's pool and the adventure pool are available from May 17, and from the 31st, you can also splash around in the beach pool and two thermal pools. However, you will have to wait until June 14 for the wave pool and slides.
Which beaches open on May 31?
According to Termalfurdo.hu, the outdoor pools of the Gellért Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool will be available from the end of May, and the Római Open-Air Bath from June 15.
Lupa Beach, on the northern outskirts of Budapest, will open on the weekend of 30 May. There is no entrance fee this weekend, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can warm up for this year's beach season with daytime parties and children's activities.
Beaches in Budapest: one more important detail about the opening
It is important to note that these times may change depending on the weather. In case of cool, rainy weather, the beach may open later than planned, but in case of persistently warm weather, it is not impossible that the beach area will open earlier.
So it is worth paying attention to the news and social media updates if you are interested in the exact opening of the beaches in Budapest.
+1 option outside the city
About a 55 minute train ride and a short walk away from Budapest Nyugati station is Lake Palatinus in Esztergom. This 32 hectare former mining lake is not only open to beach goers but also to divers, as there is a diving base along its shores. This popular recreational spot is famous for having crystal-clear water, often with excellent visibility, making it ideal for swimming.
The lake is operated by the local Szent István Bath, and opened its 2025 season on 17 May. If you decide to take the train, it's best to get off at Dorog station.
