Budapest Extends Night Metro and Bus From June 2025

Budapest’s night transport is being adapted to changing travel habits: starting June 1, the major metro lines will run later every night. The extended metro hours will be coordinated with the schedules of more than 40 daytime and several nighttime services. This extension marks the first step in a full reform of the city’s night public transport system, aiming to provide more departures and better connections so that all areas of Budapest are accessible by night.

From Sunday, June 1, the Budapest metro will run longer: the operating hours of the M2, M3 and M4 metros will be extended. The modification is in line with changed travel habits, with the last trains leaving the city centre around midnight on weekdays and around 1 am on weekends, and every 10 minutes.

The operating hours of the metros will be changed as follows:

On weekdays, from Sunday night to Thursday night

  • the M2 metro will leave Deák Ferenc Square in both directions at 0:00;

  • the M3 metro towards Újpest-központ at 0:03, and towards Kőbánya-Kispest at 23:56;

  • the M4 metro from Kálvin Square to Kelenföld will leave for the last time at 0:04.

Friday and Saturday nights

  • the M2 metro will leave Deák Ferenc Square in both directions at 1:00;

  • the M3 metro towards Újpest-központ at 1:03, and towards Kőbánya-Kispest at 00:56;

  • the M4 metro from Kálvin Square to Kelenföld will leave for the last time at 1:04.

Night network aligned with the metro
The timetable of the surface services closely connected to the metros will also be modified, which will be aligned with the last metro services, typically departing from the city centre around midnight, on weekdays and weekends. Thanks to this, more than 40 daytime services will operate in coordination with the extended operating hours of the metro, making it easier to reach the outer districts of the capital even at night. The affected services are as follows:

trams: 2, 3, 6, 14, 24, 41, 47, 56A, 61;
Trolleybus 80;
Buses: 5, 7, 8E, 11, 16, 20E, 21, 30, 31, 44, 45, 57, 58, 66, 85, 95, 97E, 105, 112, 114, 123A, 136, 139, 144, 150, 151, 168E, 182, 196A, 200E, 220, 276E.
In addition to the daytime services, the previously departing night services also connect to the metros, thus ensuring access to areas not covered by the daytime services in the previous list.

The expanded metro service also affects the night services running on the parallel route with the metros, of which some night services, not running on the full route, and additional services will no longer run.

The biggest change is that the night buses running on the M3 metro route will run differently during the metro's operating hours compared to before:

  • in the south, buses 914 and 950 will only run from Határ út towards the outer districts,

  • in the north, bus 914 typically runs from Nyugati pályaudvar, while buses 950 run from Újpest center towards the outer areas.

The timetables of routes 931, 990, 907 and 908A are also changing.
