Filozófusok Kertje — the Garden of Philosophers
What a peaceful little gem hidden away on Gellért Hill, just a short walk from the more famous Citadel and Liberty Statue. It’s one of my favorite secret spots in Budapest — a serene place where you can sit, reflect, and enjoy panoramic views of the city away from the big crowds.
What makes it special?
This garden is home to a beautiful sculpture group created by Nándor Wagner, featuring five great thinkers from different cultures standing in a circle:
Abraham
Jesus
Buddha
Laozi (Lao Tzu)
Akhenaten (the Egyptian pharaoh)
They symbolize the shared spiritual heritage of humanity. There are also three other statues nearby — Gandhi, Bodhidharma, and Saint Francis of Assisi.
The garden itself is tranquil, often with birdsong and gentle breezes. It's especially magical at sunset, when the city is bathed in golden light.
How to get there:
By foot: A 10-15 minute walk up from Gellért Hill or the Citadel.
Closest tram stop: Szent Gellért tér, then a climb.
Wear comfy shoes — it's a bit of a hike but absolutely worth it.
Tip:
Bring a little snack or a coffee, find a quiet bench, and just be. It's a perfect spot for writing in a travel journal or simply soaking in the spiritual calm.
