Extended Night Metro and Bus Improvements in Budapest

Budapest is set to enhance its night public transport services, with the metro running until 1 AM on Fridays, Saturdays, and nights before public holidays. The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) is also refining the night bus network to improve efficiency and coverage.

BKK prepared a presentation for the meeting of the Budapest's Committee on Climate Protection, Transport and Urban Developmentthat outlines the changes to come.

The new metro schedule extends operation from the previous 11:40 PM closure to 1 AM on key nights, aligning Budapest with other major European cities. This aims to support late-night travel while maintaining cost efficiency.

According to the document BKK is also proposed extending the night bus network by:

  • Aligning key routes with metro lines for better connections.
  • Increasing frequency to address overcrowding.
  • Expanding service to underserved areas.
  • The new service would have 46 night-only bus services, 3 metro/metro replacements, 12 day-night services + 4 night services operating on routes similar to daytime services.
  • The M1 metro, trams 1 and 47 would also operate with extended operating hours.

The 100E (airport) bus would have its terminus moved from Deák Ferenc Square to the Western Railway Station (Nyugati Pályaudvar), while still stopping at Deák Ferenc Square. This change aims to provide better connectivity for passengers from various parts of the city.

The fares are to change according to the following:

  • Single ticket: from 450 HUF to 500 HUF
  • Onboard single ticket: from 600 HUF to 700 HUF
  • 10-ticket booklet: from 4,000 HUF to 4,500 HUF
  • 30-minute ticket: from 530 HUF to 600 HUF
  • 90-minute ticket: from 750 HUF to 850 HUF
  • 24-hour Budapest ticket: from 2,500 HUF to 2,750 HUF
  • 72-hour Budapest ticket: from 5,500 HUF to 5,750 HUF

Extending metro hours and refining night bus services mark a significant step in modernizing Budapest’s transportation system. These improvements will provide better connectivity, support the city’s nightlife, and enhance overall mobility for residents and visitors.
