Getting Around Hungary Just Got Easier: Train and Bus Tickets Now Available in One App
MÁV, the Hungarian State Railways, has just rolled out major upgrades to its travel app, MÁV+, making it significantly easier for tourists and locals alike to buy tickets and plan trips.
One App For All Your Travel Needs
With the newly updated MÁV+ app, travelers can now purchase both train and bus tickets in one place. Whether you're hopping on a train to Lake Balaton or catching a regional bus to a charming countryside town like Esztergom or Szentendre, the app plans your journey and issues the necessary tickets in a single step.
This is the first time in Hungary that combined tickets are available digitally — even for multi-leg trips that include both bus and train segments. It means no more switching between platforms or searching for multiple tickets: one app handles it all.
From May 30, 2025, the app supports ticket purchases for nearly all intercity buses operated by Volánbusz and trains nationwide. Just enter your starting point and destination, and the app finds the best connection — even if it involves transfers. Whether you need a train, a bus, or both, MÁV+ generates a single, unified ticket that covers your full trip. Your tickets can be shown directly on your phone or printed — even separately for train and bus if needed, and the app is available in English, making it tourist-friendly.
Already downloaded by over 50,000 users, the app is continuously improving based on user feedback.
The state owned MÁV is not stopping here. The app will soon feature a delay protection function, offering compensation or assistance in case of significant delays — a service especially valuable to travelers on tight schedules.
And if you're wondering: the old MÁV app is still operational, but the new MÁV+ version is where all the innovation is happening announced Zsolt Hegyi company CEO on his Facebook page.
Hungary's extensive railway and regional bus network makes it easy to explore the country. The MÁV+ app takes the guesswork out of navigating this system, allowing you to buy tickets and plan your route seamlessly, in English, and without queueing at the station.
The MÁV+ app is available for iOS and Android. Just search for MÁV+ in your app store and download it before your trip. It's your perfect travel companion for discovering Hungary beyond the capital.
