Discover Hungary’s Cultural Treasures on Night of Museums 2025
If you're visiting Budapest in June, don't miss one of the most vibrant cultural events of the year: Night of Museums (Múzeumok Éjszakája), taking place on Saturday, June 21, 2025. For one magical evening, museums across the country stay open late into the night, offering special exhibitions, guided tours, family-friendly activities, live performances, and more. It's a unique chance to explore Hungarian heritage and art in a festive, unforgettable atmosphere.
A Brief History of Museum Night
The Night of Museums began in Berlin in 1997, and quickly spread across Europe as a way to make culture more accessible and exciting to the public. Hungary joined the initiative in 2002, and since then, it has become one of the country's most popular cultural festivals. Held annually around the summer solstice, the event celebrates the role of museums in preserving national identity while offering fun and interactive programs for all ages. Over the past two decades, it has grown into a tradition attended by hundreds of thousands each year.
This year, over 470 public collections are participating, with more than 2,700 programs awaiting visitors throughout the Carpathian Basin. As Minister of Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó announced in Gödöllő, the event continues to grow in popularity—last year alone, more than 330,000 people joined the celebration of museums nationwide.
Special Highlight for 2025: Jókai 200
In 2025, Night of Museums also celebrates the 200th anniversary of Hungarian writer Mór Jókai’s birth. As part of the official Jókai 200 Memorial Year, special literary-themed programs will be added to the evening's rich cultural offering. Whether you're a literature enthusiast or just curious about Hungarian history, this is a perfect opportunity to discover one of the nation’s most influential authors in an interactive and engaging way.
