All Aboard the World’s Longest Children-Operated Railway!
The Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút) in Budapest is a one-of-a-kind railway operated mainly by children aged 10 to 14. It stretches nearly 12 kilometers through the scenic Buda Hills and is the longest children-run railway in the world. Kids take special courses to learn railway skills and safety, then work on the line under strict professional standards. It’s a popular attraction for families, offering regular train rides, a museum, and special nostalgic trips.
On Saturday, 155 young railway workers took their official oath at the Hűvösvölgy terminal during the inauguration ceremony for those who completed the 2024/2025 training course, announced MÁV, the Hungarian State Railways.
During the school year, two four-month courses were held—one in autumn and one in spring—where children learned the basics of railway work and about local landmarks. After passing exams, they were allowed to start service on the railway.
The Children’s Railway is growing in popularity, currently having a record number of child members.
In 2015, the Budapest Children’s Railway entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest railway line in the world operated by children aged 10 to 14. In summer, trains run hourly on weekdays and every 40–50 minutes on weekends. Nostalgic vintage trains also run on pre-announced special days. Since Pentecost, the renovated Children’s Railway museum at Hűvösvölgy station has been open daily during summer. The railway will celebrate its 75th anniversary with colorful family programs on August 20th at Hűvösvölgy.
