Hungarian Railway History Park – A Living Museum of Hungary’s Railway Past in Budapest
The Hungarian Railway History Park is the largest open-air railway museum in Central Europe. Located in Budapest’s 14th district on the site of the former Northern Railway Depot (Északi Fűtőház), this unique attraction offers a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of rail travel and is perfect for railway enthusiasts, families, and curious visitors of all ages.
What can you find in the Railway History Park?
The museum spans over 70,000 square meters and features more than 100 pieces of historic rolling stock, including steam engines, diesel and electric locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and even royal and government carriages.
Highlights include:
- Locomotive lineup – including the famous 424 steam engine from 1912
- Royal carriage and waiting room – recreating the journeys of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sissi)
- Interactive experiences – handcars, a miniature garden railway, and a locomotive driving simulator
- Working turntable and roundhouse – showcasing an authentic railway maintenance environment
Events and special programs
The park regularly hosts family days, steam locomotive rides, children’s activities, and themed weekends, especially popular in spring and autumn.

By public transport: From Lehel tér (Metro line M3), take buses 30 or 30A to the Vasúttörténeti Park stop. Alternatively, take a train from Nyugati Railway Station to Rákosrendező, which is a short walk from the park.
