"Let's go to the playground." This is a sentence that makes children and parents alike feel like they are over the moon. Modern playgrounds are more like places for family fun: not only do they offer lots of adventure for the kids, but many of them also provide opportunities to play together. Or you can have a picnic or other family activities on or near the playground. And it is also not a luxury anymore that some modern playgrounds in Budapest, too offer toilets and baby changing facilities. Sounds like fun? Join us to discover the best playgrounds, starting on the Pest side of the city.
Városligeti Nagyjátszótér / The Great Playground of the City Park
Since its opening in 2019, the so-called Nagyjátszótér (Great Playground) became one of the biggest, most modern and most popular playgrounds of Budapest. Families love to spend their free time in here all year round, so you will know that you are approaching the playground from the loud and cheerful noises all around.
What to expect? A really big playground covering 13 000 square meters and around 50 play elements that have been selected to develop key competences and cognitive skills for all age groups. Just to mention a few examples, there are 10 types of swings and merry-go-rounds, 3 sandpits, 6 different types of slides, 4 types of spinning toys, 2 custom-designed large rope-climbing complexes with half a dozen elements and 10 trampolines sunk into the ground. The biggest summer attraction is the long meandering stream, which can be manipulated by budding water engineers with sluices, fountains and water toys.
The central climbing frame inspired by Pál Szinyei Merse's painting The Balloon is one of several large climbing frames in the park and can be noticed from a long distance.
If you feel like in need for some refreshment, Léghajó Kert is right there for some sandwiches, ice cream and coffee for the parents but we don't think it will be easy to talk to the kids about leaving.

The Playground at the Hungarian House of Music
Maybe visiting another playground could help persuade the kids for leaving the Great Playground? Not far from there, you will find the Hungarian House of Music, and at the square in front of it, there is a really special playground: a musical playground, where children and adults can play together on a variety of outdoor instruments. You can try various drums, musical cushions sunk into the ground, oscillophones and foot-operated whistles. The playground is barrier-free, making it easy for those with limited mobility to try out the interesting instruments.

KRESZ park
Within walking distance of the Great Playground, you will find Hungary's largest and most complex KRESZ park for children. It looks like a city's roadmap, with mini streets, traffic lights and everything, where youngsters can learn about everyday traffic situations and rules in a playful way. Don't forget to bring the kids' bikes or scooters so they can play there for hours. Looking for more? A train station, an airport, a control tower, a petrol station, an electric charging station and a service point can also be found there, so it can be a programme for half of the afternoon for your family.

Muzi
With very young and quite energetic children you might find it a... well, crazy idea to go to the Hungarian National Museum but it is the playground right at the museum that we would like to recommend. You will immediately fall in love the atmosphere. The centrepiece of the playground is the "steam sawmill", all time favourite of the kids from all ages. Inside and outside you can spin all kinds of instruments, jump off the plank of the multi-level climbing frame or even land on a slide. There is also a merry-go-round next to it and you can find a drinking fountain and a toilet there, too.

Playground in Benczúr Garden
A hidden gem among the playgrounds in Budapest, near Hősök tere, which is so worth exploring! Magic hill, hilly parts with slides, animal statues, folk motifs and a whole colourful fairytale town to surround the giant tree on the Playground at Benczúr Garden. There is also an ornate castle, a boat, a water feature and a mill wheel fountain. While the little explorers enjoy the adventure, you can sit on a bench and relax. It is also a great choice with babies as there is a baby-mama swing as well as baby changing facilities and free toilets.

Pirate Playground
If you hire a car or have some friends or family who can take you for a 40-50 minutes ride by car to Csepel, it is really-really worth visiting the so-called Pirate Playground (Kalózos játszótér). It is located on the Ráckevei-Duna part, so right at the river - you will notice the huge pirate ship from a quite big distance. The ship is the centrepiece of the playground and it is absolutely beautifully designed. It is worth exploring. You will enjoy spending time at this multi-level pirate ship with stairs, nets, ladders, and photographs of the Danube's wildlife - all linked to the site. In 2018, a carved pirate was added on board, complete with a treasure chest and, of course, a parrot. You can find a drinking fountain and toilets on the playground, and in summer, you can enjoy a nice picnic and the proximity of the Danube, too.
Address: Hollandi út 141., Budapest, 21th district (Csepel)
